Moving

Moving Budget Checklist: Every Cost to Plan

A complete moving-cost checklist for local and long-distance moves, including overlap, travel, supplies, setup, and contingency.

Moving costs are easiest to control when every stage has a separate line: leaving, traveling, entering, setting up, and recovering.

Leaving the current home

Plan for notice requirements, cleaning, repairs, junk removal, storage, utility final bills, lease-break charges, and possible overlap.

Packing and transport

Include boxes, tape, protection, truck or movers, fuel, tolls, insurance, tips, specialty items, elevators, parking permits, and storage.

Travel and timing

Long-distance moves may require lodging, meals, flights, vehicle shipping, pet care, childcare, and missed work. Build a delay scenario.

Entering the new home

Add deposits, first rent, closing or setup costs, locks, utilities, internet, parking permits, basic food, cleaning, safety items, and required furniture.

Contingency and recovery

Keep a percentage for damage, delays, replacement purchases, and the first month of unfamiliar local spending. Preserve emergency savings after the move.
